Despatch from London.
Lytton regrets Douglas’s painful disclosures on the state of the prison at Vancouver Island. He hopes Douglas and the House of Assembly can remedy so great an evil.

Sir,
I have to acknowledge the receipt of your [Vancouver Island] Despatch No 33 of the 13th of August last, 1 enclosing copies of your correspondence with the House of Assembly from the 16th June, to the 10th of August.
I have read withgreatManuscript image great regret the painful disclosures as to the state of the Prison in Vancouver's Island 2 which are contained in the report of the Committee appointed to enquire into that subject, and I earnestly hope that through your energy and the favorable disposition of the Assembly measures will not only be proposed but carried out to remedy so great an evil.
