I have to acknowledge the receipt of your [Vancouver Island] Despatch No 33 of the 13th of August last, 1 enclosing copies of your correspondence with the House of Assembly from the 16th June, to the 10th of August.
I have read withgreatManuscript image great regret the painful disclosures as to the state of the Prison in Vancouver's Island 2 which are contained in the report of the Committee appointed to enquire into that subject, and I earnestly hope that through your energy and the favorable disposition of the Assembly measures will not only be proposed but carried out to remedy so great an evil.
