With reference to the Duke of Newcastle's despatch No. 37 of the 2nd of July last, respecting the grant of extra pay to the Royal Marines while serving in British Columbia, I transmit for your information the copy of a letter from the Admiralty enclosing a despatch from Rear Admiral Sir R. Baynes on the subject, together with a copy of the answer which the SecretaryManuscript imageSecretary of State has returned to the Lords Commissioners, and I am desired to authorize you in accordance with the opinion expressed in this correspondence to issue to the party of Royal Marines the rate of Colonial pay which had been promised to them previously to the receipt of the Duke of Newcastle's despatch above referred to.
