With reference to my Despatch of the
29th of May last I have the
honor to transmit to you a copy of a Report from
Colonel Hawkins
detailing the proceedings of the Commission under his Command during the
               Season
1861.

I have to direct your attention to the concluding paragraph of this
Report as Her Majesty's Government deem it most important
that
 that measures
should be at once taken for the preservation of the Boundary Monuments
and Cuttings, and I would suggest for your consideration whether some of
               the Royal Engineers stationed in
British Columbia could not be the
proper persons to undertake this service.
