Despatch from London.

Newcastle forwards Douglas a copy of Sophia Cox's request that her estranged husband,
William Cox, be forced to provide her with financial support and asks Douglas to investigate.
Newcastle writes that if Sophia Cox's claims are true, William Cox must either provide her
with support or
immediately be removed from his appointment.

I have the honor to forward to you a copy of a Memorial from Mrs.
Sophia Elizabeth Cox, stating that her husband Mr. William G. Cox has
emigrated to British Columbia leaving her without the necessary means of
subsistence.
As I perceive fromthe
the Blue Book of the Colony that Mr. Cox is
Stipendiary Magistrate at Rock Creek, I have to instruct you to
communicate with him, and unless he is able to refute the truth of this
representation to inform him that he must either provide for his Wife out
of his salary (which you will cause to be donein
in an efficient manner,
and so as to prevent evasion) or else he must immediately be removed
from his appointment.
