My Lord Duke,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Grace's despatch of the 9th of October last No 57, enclosing a list of the names of 18 men, late of the Royal Engineers, who were employed on the North American Boundary Commission, and whopurchasedManuscript image purchased their discharge on the return of the detachment to England; and instructing me, at the instance of Colonel Hawkins R.E., to take measures for making free grants of land in British Columbia, to the extent of Thirty Acres each, to such of these men as may wish to avail themselves of the indulgence, and on the sameconditionsManuscript image conditions of residence and Military Service as were required from the soldiers of the Royal Engineers under Colonel Moody; and I beg to acquaint your Grace that I will take steps at an early period to carry these instructions into effect.
