My Lord Duke,
I have the honor to report that I reached New Westminster on the 20th of this month and took the oaths of office as Governor on the following day.
The inhabitants wished to make manifest their loyalty to Her Majesty and attachment to the Mother Country bywelcomingManuscript image welcoming with some ceremony their new Governor. I was therefore requested to remain for some few days in the neighbouring Colony of Vancouver's Island while a sufficient number of arches and other decorations were being prepared to ornament the streets. I had every reason to be satisfied with the cordiality of my reception.
