of the numbers and dates noted in the margin.

Nothing more need be done about the B. Columbia Act. It was intended
to expire. You will observe that express provision is made that its
expiration shall not invalidate existing laws &c.

Mr Cardwell will have the goodness
to fill up the blank. As we shall
have no oppy of writing to Halifax—which is the proper place for us
to have a telegram sent to for B. Columbia—until Saty the 8th
proximo the quickest mode of communicating with Govr Seymour will be
to request the B. Consul at New York to telegraph to him. From New York
the telegram will, accidents excepted, reach Governor Seymour in 4 days.
Mr Cardwell fixes 6 months.

Official habits might possibly require that we should ask the For. Office to instruct their Consul to send this message: but I think the case will admit of a dispensation from that official circuit of correspondence and that a direct Letter for this Office to the Consul will suffice. Mr Seymour can be told orally when he arrives to settle the cost, I suppose 4 or £5, with the Consul.

It is comparatively a small matter. But I confess I would rather
not sign a letter giving the Foreign Office the "go-by" in this
affair, and conveying orders to one of their officers without their
knowledge. I should prefer therefore such a draft as I sketch.
