Regarding the joint military occupation of San Juan Island, Seymour forwards a letter from General Halleck, commander of
the American Forces on the Pacific,which Seymour finds
civil and satisfactory.Elliot’s minute suggests sending this despatch to the Admiralty. Adderley minutes that
this department will correspond in spirit.One of the included documents is a letter from Halleck to Oldfield regarding the deserter in the American camp on San Juan and actions taken to prevent another occurrence of the situation.

With reference to My Confidential despatch of 5th
January respecting the relations existing between the Officers
of the English and American Garrisonson
on San Juan Island, I
have now the honor to forward Copy of a reply given by General
Halleck to a letter written on My recommendation by the present
Senior Naval Officer at Esquimalt.
