In reply to your Letter of the 22nd Inst on the subject of a difference which has arisen in the Island of San Juan in consequence of Captain Bazalgette Commanding the Detachment of Royal Marines there having demanded of the Officer in command of the United States Forces on the Island the surrender of a man in the United States Army who deserted from the British Camp in May 1861, I am commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to state for the information oftheManuscript image the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos that Captain Bazalgette will be relieved in the command of the Detachment of Royal Marines stationed at San Juan by order of the Senior Naval Officer in the Pacific, to whom Instructions will be sent by the Mail of this Evening.
