I have received from the Colonial Committee of the Church of
Scotland a Memorial, copy of which is enclosed praying for a grant
of land in
Vancouver Island for the benefit of the Scotch Church
established there and I have also received from
Mr. Dundasa a letter
addressed to the
Earl of Zetland by the Presbyterian community of
Victoria urging the same request. In reply I have caused the
Memorialists to be informed that the grant of land to the English
Church to which they refer was made by the
Hudson's Bay Company, and
not by the Crown, that it is not the practice of the Crown to make
such grants, and that under these circumstances I am unable to comply
with the prayer of their Memorials.
