My Lord Duke,
I have had the honor to receive Your Grace's despatch No 101of

more aware than I of the difficulty which would
attend a naval or military interference with the miners in that
distant region; and when pressed by the local magistrate for an
armed force in 1867 I proceeded in person to thescene
