Memo, Barclay to Merivale (Permanent Under-Secretary)

Mr Barclay presents his Compliments to Mr Merivale and begs to acknowledge the Receipt of his note of the 20th Instant, accompanying a packet addressed to the Officer Administering the Government of Vancouver's Island. The vessel by which the packet was to have been forwarded, had it reached the Hudson's Bay House on time, sailed from Gravesend early in the morning of the 20th, and as no other vessel belonging to the Company will leave England for Vancouver's Island before the Month of October, Mr Barclay begs to be informed whether Mr Merivale wishes it to be retained at the Hudson's Bay House till then, or returned to the Colonial Office.

Mr Elliot
The despatch in question is of no particular importance, & I think it may just as well be left at the Hudson's Bay house with a view to its being forwarded in Octr as returned here.
It wd however be very useful to us if the Hudson's Bay Co wd take the trouble to apprize us beforehand when they have any Vessel about to sail for VanCouver's Island.
