No. 16
11th May 1854
My Lord Duke
I had the honor of receiving, on the 16th of April last, your Grace's Despatch No 4 of the 12th April 1853,
Sent 27 Apl/53.
in which you are pleased to inform me that Her Majesty's Government regard the conduct of myself, the Naval Officers and seamen, and others concerned in the two expeditions undertaken against the Native Tribes for effecting the surrender of the murderers of the late Peter Brown, as highly creditable to all the parties concerned, and deserving of their entireapprobationManuscript image approbation. In stating to your Grace how highly I appreciate the approbation of Her Majesty's Government, thus kindly expressed, I hardly do justice to my own feelings, which are largely shared by all those associated with me in the execution of that service, to whom I have had an opportunity of communicating the subject of your Grace's Despatch.
I have the honor to be
Your Grace's most obedient humble Servant
