I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your Grace's Despatch No 7 of the 27th August last, transmitting a selection of legal works for my guidance and assistance in administering the duties of this Government, the last of which I have placed among the public records at this place.
I have also to acknowledge the receipt of your Grace's Despatch No 8 of the 8th June last,

approving of the means adopted to prevent persons from settling or visiting the Queen Charlotte Islands for the purpose of digging for Gold without a Licence, and of my general proceedings in despatching the "Virago" to Queen Charlotte Islands, to call the natives to account for the capture of the AmericanSchoonerManuscript image Schooner "Susan Sturges," and of the instructions issued by me to Captain Prevost, for his guidance in the course of that service.
