No. 7
Downing Street
26th April 1856
Sir,
I have to acknowledge your Despatch No 1 of the 31st January calling my attention to the charge made by the United States Post Office in Pugets Sound for the Postage on certain documents forwarded to your Government. As you expressed a wish in your Despatch No 6 of the 28th Feby 1854 that theManuscript image Secretary of State's Despatches should be forwarded by the Panama route, the Despatches from this Office have hitherto been so transmitted, but for the future I will cause all documents exceeding sixteen ounces in weight to be sent to the Hudson's Bay Company for transmission to you, or request the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to have them conveyed by any of Her Majesty's ships proceeding to the Pacific.
I have the honor to be Sir,
Your most obedient humble servant
H. Labouchere
