Stanley confirms to Douglas that the defraying of Cameron’s salary should devolve upon the local legislature.
No. 2
30 April 1858
I have to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch of the 22nd
January No 3 requesting the support of Her Majesty's Government in
favor of any measure which may be proposed by the Hudson's Bay Company
for defraying the salary of the Chief Justice of the Colony.
Having communicated with the Governor of the Company upon this
subject I learn from him that instructions (of which he has sent me a
copy) were sent to you upon it in November last. It appears to be the
opinion of the Company, from which I do not myself see reason to dissent
that it should devolve upon the local Legislature to provide the means
of defraying the salary of the Chief Justice, and I trust that you will
be enabled to secure a proper provision for him from that source.
