I am directed by the Lords Commissoners of Her Majesty's Treasury to acquaint you for the information of the Duke of Newcastle with reference to Your letter of the 13 Inst. that instructions have been given to the Paymaster General to pay from the Treasury Chest, to any Person duly authorized to receive the same on behalf of the Hudson's Bay Company, the sum of £25000 "on account" of the claims of that Company in respect of the resumption of Vancouver's Island by the Crown. This payment is to be treated asManuscript imageas an advance from the Chest and to be repaid from a Vote of Parliament to be taken whenever the final adjustment of the Accounts between the Company and the Crown shall have been established.
