Sir,
Her Majesty's Government have had before them your despatch No. 24 of the 7th of May last repecting the Military occupation of the Island of San Juan and suggesting the expediency in the present state of the question of jurisdiction over that territory of the withdrawal by the United States and by Great Britain of the Civil Magistracy Manuscript imagein that Island; and I am directed by the Secretary of State to transmit to you for your information a copy of a despatch which Lord John Russell has in consequence addressed to Her Majesty's Minister at Washington instructing him to propose to the United States Govenment the withdrawal on both sides of the Civil Magistracy from the Island.
