I am directed by the Secretary of State to acknowledge the receipt
of your despatch No. 34 of the
7 of July last, reporting that
disturbances had arisen amongst the Native Tribes of
Vancouver Island.
The Secretary of State entertains no doubt of the propriety of
disarming such
a
a dangerous race as the Hydah tribe, and directs me to
express his hope that the measures you have set in operation with a
view of preserving good order among the Indians generally may be
successful.
