Hammond, responding to a letter from the Colonial Office dated
4 January 1861 [draft included in Berens to Newcastle, 18 December 1860, CO 305:15, no. 11771, 504],
writes Rogers to inform Newcastle that Russell
does not consider that the [HBC has] any claim upon Her Majesty's Government in respect of their establishment upon San Juan.

I have laid before Lord John Russell your Letter of the 4th instant,
inclosing a Copy of a Letter from the Governor of the Hudson's Bay
Company respecting the question of the company's Establishment on the
Island of San Juan.
I am to state to you, in reply, for the information ofThe

Grace's views on this subject, as stated in your Letter; at all
