I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of
Sir Frederic Rogers'
letter of the
23
instant enclosing a despatch from
Governor Douglas transmitting
a correspondence which has passed between himself and the Agent of the
Hudson's
Bay Company in
Vancouver's Island on the
subject of the Sale by the Company of a certain portion of water frontage in
Victoria
required for a public landing place and Harbour Master's Office.
In reply I beg to state that
there
there is no wish on the part of this Company to do anything that would militate against
the public
interests. I therefore hasten to inform your Grace that in compliance with the suggestion
thrown out in
Sir Frederic Rogers' letter I have directed that specific instructions shall be sent by
this days post to the Agent of this Company at
Victoria to suspend
the sales of the land in question as referred to in the
correspondence between
Governor Douglas and
M Dallas.
