Newcastle acknowledges Douglas's despatch no. 40, dated 25 June 1861,
and informs him that
the British Detachment is to be retained on [San Juan Island] whether the American force be withdrawn or not.

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch No.40 of the 25th June last, respecting the intended withdrawal of the United States Troops from San Juan; on this subject I beg to refer you to my despatch No. 68 of the 24th ultimo, instructing you that
