Cardwell informs Kennedy that Cox & Co. have submitted Kennedy’s application for his salary. Cardwell instructs Cox & Co. that Kennedy’s salary must be paid from Colonial funds.

Sir,
I have the honor to acquaint you that Messrs Cox & Co have transmitted to this Office your application dated 1st of April for the payment to them of your salary from the 26th to the 31st of March last.

I have caused Messrs Cox [& Co] to be informed that your salary as Governor of Vancouver Island is not payable from Imperial but from Colonial funds, and that it must be drawn by you in the Colony.
