On behalf of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, Romaine transmits a copy of a letter and its enclosures from Denman requesting the removal of Captain Bazalgette. Romaine conveys that the Lords
do not consider it expedient at present to remove Captain Bazalgette.

I am commanded by My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to transmit
herewith for the information of Mr Secretary Cardwell a Copy of a
letter, dated the 3rd Decr last, No 58, from Rear Adml the
Honble J. Denman, and of its enclosures, requesting the removal of
Captain Bazalgette—in charge of the Detachment of Royal Marines at
San Juan—in consequence of his proceedings in connection with the
sloop "Random," and I am to state that my Lords do notconsider

Copy, Denman to Secretary to the Admiralty, 3 December 1864,
recommending that Bazalgette be replaced due to his unsatisfactory
handling of the
Random incident, and forwarding correspondence on the matter.
Bazalgette to Denman, 23 October 1864, advising he had
received a report that a sloop engaged in selling liquor to natives
had been seized by the American commander on the island, but that as
yet he had no further details to report.
Bazalgette to Denman, 22 November 1864, providing particulars of
his efforts to assist in the capture of the vessel and crew of the
Random, wanted in British Columbia on a charge of murdering
natives.
Copy, Denman to Bazalgette, 24 November 1864, expressing displeasure
at his actions throughout the incident, and advising that the matter
would be submitted "for the consideration of the Lds. Commrs of the
Admy.
