Sir,
I have the honor to transmit the copy of a letter from Mr B.W.
Pearse, Acting Surveyor General of this Colony applying for
confirmation in that office.
I have explained to Mr Pearse that it was in my opinion improbable
that you would under any circumstances appoint to anoffice
office for which
the Legislative Assembly had refused to vote a salary.

In the absence of any information on the subject of union of these
Colonies I am unable at present to offer any recommendation which
might embarrass the future settlement or redistribution of offices.

The Governor has assigned one sufficient reason agt Confirming Mr Pearse in the Office of Surveyor Genl viz: that the Legislature has refused any salary for the Office; but another reason is that he does not say a word in his favor.
