Antwerp is a major city in Belgium and was named one of the “duchy” capitals in the
early medieval period. From the 15th to the 19th century, Antwerp grew as a leading
commercial centre of western Europe; most of its wealth resulted from colonial trade.
Although Antwerp experienced a minor economic decline in the 18th century, it regained
its position as a major seaport in the following century.1
