The son of an Anglican clergyman, William Dealtry was educated at Eton and Trinity
College, Cambridge. He was appointed assistant junior clerk (4th class) in the North American Department
of the Colonial Office in April 1837, with promotions to assistant clerk (2nd class) in April 1854, and senior clerk (1st class) in May 1867. After a brief tenure as chief clerk of the Colonial Office in 1879, he retired. In 1881 he became a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George.
