HMS Inconstant was a fifth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy, designed by Captain Hayes and launched
on June 19th, 1836.

Inconstant's captain at the time, John Shepherd, refused passage to disgruntled HBC employees,
who
were dissatisfied about the absence of their Employer,
and wanted to,
in the character of Distressed British subjects,
make for San Francisco.
