The Mackenzie is the largest river in Canada, at 4,241 km long; it is the second largest
in North America, after the Mississippi.1 And, the Mackenzie's drainage basin is equally prolific, at 1.8 million square km.
The river is named after Alexander Mackenzie, who traversed its length by canoe in 1789.2
