Nootka Island is nestled into the channel-cut west coast of Vancouver Island. The southern shore of Nootka Island is home to the famed Yuquot, or Friendly Cove. The island's southern shore faces Nootka Sound.
According to Walbran, Nootka Island is listed on Spanish explorer Dionisio Alcalá-Galiano's 1795 chart as “Isla de Nutka”; and the Island was for a time named “Ilsa de Mazarredo”
after Spanish naval officer Josef de Mazarredo.2
