Cuffe served as the under-secretary of state for the colonies in 1852.1
Cuffe succeeded in the earldom at the early age of two, after the untimely death of
his father.2 He served as a Conservative member of Parliament for Ipswich in 1842 and representative
peer for Ireland from 1846 until 1865,3 when he died from the effects of an accidental fall.4
