With reference to your letter of the 5th Instant; I am commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to transmit to you herewith, for the information of His Grace the Duke of Newcastle, a copy of a Report from the Deputy Adjutant General of Royal Marines on the subject of Extra pay to the Marines at Vancouvers Island, and the periods for which paid.

The enclosure to this letter, taken in conjunction with our minutes on 11.191, supplies very clear information. You have now to choose between two courses:
1st Write to the Governor simply answering his question by referring to the previous instructions which will have settled it to his satisfaction?
or, 2ndly, make some inquiry about extra pay at San Juan? But you will see that apparently the Marines are notManuscript image receiving extra pay there, and we have not as yet been asked for any.
