Douglas informs Newcastle that he has granted Gosset a six month leave of absence and appointed Brew acting treasurer of British Columbia in his place.

I have the honor to acquaint your Grace that I have granted 6 months leave of absence to date from 1st September, on Medical Certificate, to Captain Gosset R.E. the Treasurer of British Columbia, and I transmitherewithManuscript image herewith the usual Certificate of the same.
2. I have placed the charge of the Department in the hands of Mr Brew, the Chief Inspector of Police whom I have appointed to act as Treasurer during the absence of Captain Gosset.

Confirm the leave of absence granted to Capn Gosset: and approve the selection of Mr Brew as Acting Treasurer?
I think that the Acting Appointment has fallen on an excellent man. Mr Brew served in the Commissariat Dt in the Crimea, which wd qualify him for the postManuscript image of Treasurer in B.C. In other respects, he is suited for any situation which requires business habits, & energy of character. As Superintendent of Police his Office has been a complete sinecure.
