With reference to your letter of the 11th of December 1862
This is an error of the Admiralty's. The letter dated 11th of Decr was written by the Col: Sectary to Capt Richards.
signifying the concurrence of the Secretary of State to the proposition that the Colonial Government of British Columbia should contribute the sum of £500 per annum in aid of the cost of the survey of the coast of the Colony; I am commanded by My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to request you will move the Duke of Newcastle to cause the amount in question (which My Lords are informed has been agreed to by the Colonial Government) to be now paid over to the Naval Department in aid of the first year's cost of the Survey,andManuscript image and to cause a similar amount to be paid over annually until the completion of the Service.

In a desph dated the 7 of last March No 14—which is still in circulation—the Governor reports having placed this sum of £500 for a survey on the Coast of B.C. on the Estimates for this year. Those Estimates have not yet recd the Duke of Newcastle's approval, nor have they been sent to the Treasury.
If the amount be sanctioned the Govr shd be instructed to act in compliance withManuscript image this request.

The despatch returned from circulation afterwards, and the estimates were agreed to, so far as we are concerned. I annex a draft to Admiralty, asking a preliminary question.
