Romaine to Under-Secretary of State
21st May 1867
Sir,
I have received and laid before my Lord's Commissioners of the Admiralty Your letter of the 16th Instant transmitting a copy of a despatch dated the 7th of March from the Governor of British Columbia urging the expediency of establishing a subsidized line of British Packets between Panama and the Colony. My Lords have received representations from the Senior Naval Officer at VanCouvers of the inconvenience to which the Naval Service is reposed for want of a regular mail service, and there can be nodoubtManuscript image doubt that it is most desirable to organize some more reliable system than exists at present for communicating with the British Possessions in N.W. America and the Head Quarters of the Naval Commander in Chief at Vancouver Island.
My Lords would therefore suggest that the question be brought under the consideration of the Lords of the Treasury and Post Master General.
I am Sir
Your obedient servant
W.G. Romaine
