Smith writes to the Under-Secretary of State in response to a letter from Merivale regarding the rumoured intent of Mormons to emigrate to HBC territory. Smith forwards an extract of a letter from Simpson on the subject for the information of Stanley.
The minutes note that an attempted emigration by the Mormons is improbable.

Sir,
I am directed by the Governor and Committee of the Hudson’s Bay Company to acknowledge
the receipt of Mr Merivale’s letter of the 25th Instant transmitting for the information of the Company a copy of a Despatch from H M Minister
at Washington relative to the rumoured intention of the Mormons to emigrate to the
Company’s Territory.
In expressing the thanks of the Directors of the Hudson’s Bay Company for the communication
I am instructed to forward for the information of Lord Stanley the accompanying Extract of a letter bearing upon this subject recently

I never supposed they would go to the Sas Katchewan, but an attempt to occupy the
Fraser's River Valley is also equally improbable.
