Shepherd to Stanley
Hudson's Bay House London
11th March 1858
My Lord,
I have the honour to inform your Lordship that a letter has been lately received from Governor Douglas dated Victoria, Vancouver's Island January 4th 1858 enclosing Copy of a Proclamation, and other documents relative to the discoveries of gold in the District of Thompson's River; but as Governor Douglas mentions that he has written a Despatch on this subject direct to the Colonial office, I do not consider it necessary to trouble Your Lordship with copies of these documents.
The auriferous district referred to is not included within the limits of Governor Douglas's jurisdiction, and it is possible that hisregulationsManuscript image regulations may be disregarded; I shall therefore be glad to learn what course Her Majesty's Government intend to pursue, and at the same time take leave to assure Your Lordship that the Hudson's Bay Company will cordially co-operate with Her Majesty's Government in carrying out any regulations which may be established with a view to the preservation of good order in the gold mining districts.
I have the honour to be My
Lord,
Your mo: obedt Servant

This has been kept back in the hope that the Governor's despatches on this subject (2084 and 2459) which are in circulation would have been returned to the Dept. I now send this on, without them.
