Douglas reports that he appointed George Heaton sheriff of Vancouver Island.
The minutes Put by but Carnarvon asks Lytton if he gave Heaton a letter of recommendation as Douglas reports.

I have the honor to report to you that on the 10th January last I appointed Mr George H. Heaton, to the office of Sheriff for Vancouver's Island.
2. Mr Heaton was introduced to me by your letter of theManuscript imagethe 1st October last,
No record of this letter sent to the Dept.

and I was very glad to be able to confer this appointment upon him, as well as to have a person on the spot so well recommended, and apparently so well fitted for the discharge of the duties appertaining to it.
