The War Department having represented to my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty that a request that was made by this Department on the 6th June last, for directions to be given to Colonel Moody, of the Royal Engineers, for the erection of a Powder Magazine at Vancouvers Island for the supply of H.M's Ships upon the Northern Division of the Pacific Station, had been forwarded to His Grace the Duke of Newcastle, I am commanded by their Lordships to request you will move His Grace toManuscript imageto cause me to be informed what instructions have been sent to Colonel Moody upon this subject.

Inform the Admiralty that by a Letter from the War Office, dated the 22d Oct., the Duke of Newcastle was apprized of the requirements of the Admiralty on this subject, and that on the [blank] His Grace had instructed Govr Douglas to give the orders which were necessary to Colonel Moody. The Colonel was Manuscript imageto be at liberty to correspond with the Inspector G. of Fortifications on this subject, & the Governor was to place a suitable site for the Powder Magazine at the disposal of the War Office.

This seems the proper answer: but the Admy shd have a copy of the instructions given to the Governor. Draft may be prepared.
