My Lord Duke
Mr Pemberton the Colonial Surveyor of Vancouvers Island, having applied to me for leave to absent himself from the Colony on urgent private business, I have the honor to inform your Grace, that I have granted him leave of absence for 8 months, in accordanceManuscript imageaccordance with his request.
2. I have informed Mr Pemberton that his salary would cease from the date of his quitting the Colony.
3. With reference to any future appointment Her Majestys Government may contemplate, I have much pleasure in recommending Mr Pemberton for confirmed appointment as Colonial Surveyor, his application to business, activity,Manuscript imageactivity, and assiduity deserve my commendation, and render him in my opinion a valuable public officer.
