The mournful intelligence conveyed to me by Your Grace's Despatch of
the
16 December last, of the death of His Royal Highness
the Prince Consort, was received in this Colony with feelings of the most
unfeigned regret.
2. I considered it
becoming becoming upon so melancholy an occasion to make
public Your Graces Despatch, and to call upon Her Majesty's loving
Subjects to testify their sympathy and sorrow by appearing in
mourning. I enclose a copy of the notice I issued, and I need only
remark that the warm response made to that call abundantly proves
that in no part of Her Majesty's Dominions are to be found Subjects
more loyal and attached than in the remote
Island of Vancouver.
