Romaine forwards intelligence advising that the Officer commanding the Royal Marine Camp at San Juan Island reports that United States troops in the Oregon District have been ordered to hold ready to be relieved by Volunteers. Elliot minutes that the occupation of San Juan by Volunteers instead of by Regulars must more or less increase the chances of collision in that quarter.

I am commanded by My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, to state to you, for the information of the Duke of Newcastle, that in a letter dated the 25th Octr last, Captain Spencer of HMS Topaze, has forwarded a communication from the Officer commanding the Royal Marine Camp at San Juan Island, reporting that the regular Troops of the United States Government in theOregonManuscript image Oregon District, have been ordered to hold ready to be relieved by Volunteers.
