I have to acknowledge your letter of
24 instant, with one from the
Governor of
Vancouvers Island in which he suggests that some
arrangement should be come to with the
Hudson's Bay C to allow of
the sale of the Land claimed by them on the ground of occupation
previous to
1849, pending the settlement of the questions respecting
this claim in dispute between the Company and H.M. Government.
2. In reply I have to state that all questions regarding this Land
have been set at rest by the Agreement concluded with the Company on
the
3 of February last which has no doubt been communicated to the
Governor. That Agreement will have put it in the power of the
Governor to dispose of all the Land in the
Town of Victoria not
previously disposed of to others, with the exception of some small
reservations for the Company, and will therefore have exactly met the
object proposed in his present despatch.
