No. 1, Miscellaneous
8th February 1864
My Lord Duke,
I have the honor to request that Your Grace will be pleased to authorize the Crown Agents for the Colonies to procure and send out to this Colony as soon as convenient, Six ruby glass shades for the Fisgard Island Light House, of the dimensions and according to the description herewithenclosedManuscript image enclosed.
2. This requisition is rendered necessary, as the Shades applied for in my Despatch of the 1st August 1862, No 40, and sent out per Steam Ship "Fusi Yama", are found to be useless, as will appear from the accompanying letter from the Lightkeeper, being of the wrong dimensions. I would mention, moreover, that Three of these Shades were broken on the voyage, and not, so far as could be judged, from any unusual violence. IwouldManuscript image would, therefore, ask that in the present instance such care may be taken in packing the Shades, as may ensure, so far as may be, their delivery in a sound condition.
I have the honor to be
My Lord Duke
Your Graces most obedient
and humble Servant
James Douglas
