Julyan sends correspondence regarding the arrival of the

In reply to the enquiries contained in your letter of the 2nd
instant I now enclose for the information of Mr Secretary Cardwell
copy of a letter from our Shipping Agents by which it would appear
that the missing Ship "John Stephenson" has arrived at Vancouver
Island.
You will probably remember that Mr Pemberton, the Surveyor General
of Vancouver, was sent to this country to superintendentthe

construction and despatch of the Machinery forwarded by this Ship,
and that the Crown Agents were requested to aid him in the matter.

He was so importuned here with regard to freight by persons connected
with the Colony that The Crown Agents undertook to invite tenders for
transport, by public advertisement, and they took every precaution to
secure, what was considered by the Marine Insurance Companies, a good
vessel for the purpose, as will be evident on referenceto

copy of which was sent to the Colonial Secretary of Vancouver at the
time.

Copy, J. & A.B. Freeland to Crown Agents, 5 November 1861, advising
that the
John Stephenson had at last arrived in Vancouver Island, with
enclosures relating to their original selection of the vessel.
"Schedule of Tenders received in answer to a public
advertisement for the conveyance to Victoria,
Vancouver Island, of about 131 tons of Freight comprising
Machinery for a Dredging Vessel and Tug," with three entries for
consideration and an explanation of the final decision, 11 December
1863, signed by Julyan.
J. & A.B. Freeland to Crown Agents, 14 December 1863, describing
arrangements made for transport of the goods and passage of
two engineers travelling with the machinery.
