No. 139, Military Expenses
With reference to my previous correspondence upon the
subject of the Military Expenses of British Columbia, and the
inability at the present moment of the Colony to meet those
expenses, I have the honor to forward to you
you herewith the copy
of a letter dated the 9th Instant, which I have received from
Colonel Moody, making requisition upon me for the sum of Three
Thousand Pounds (£3000) to defray Military Expenses already incurred
and in connection with works in progress, and in consequence thereof
I have issued instructions to the Colonial Treasurer to negociate
Bills to this extent upon Her Majesty's Paymaster General, all
of which Bills shall be advised to the Paymaster General in due course.

These constant bills are serious, but unavoidable. Some military force in the Colony was imperative; & we cd scarcely have sent a less force than we did. Until the Colony could pay itself for that military protection we knew that such bills must be drawn on us.
