In reply, I am to request that you will acquaint the Secretary of State that Mr Sidney Herbert is of opinion that every encouragement in aid Manuscript image aid of these men procuring passages for their wives and families, at their own expense should be given; but with respect to the recommendation of Col. Moody that Sergt McColl's wife and family should be sent out at the public expense, I am to observe that the regulated number of Manuscript image of women (35) accompanied the Detachment and are still in the Colony, and that Mr Herbert is therefore of opinion that Sergeant McColl should be required to provide for the expenses in question.

Mr Elliot
See despatch to Governor Douglas dated 11 August which states that measures will be taken with a view to sending these families out to their husbands &c.
I presume that we must beg the Commissioners of Emigration to undertake this service for us—and that we must ask the T-y to Manuscript image advance the money required for defraying the cost of the passages. My own opinion is that the "Cape Horn" Route for women & children, though tedious, is the best. I hope we shall get reimbursed for the advance.

My opinion is that the whole ought to be sent out. Prepare necessary drafts.
