I have the honor to be

If (as I suppose) his expectation is unreasonable we had better give him the means of knowing that it is so.
How long does it appear by our books that despatches take on an average in going to B. Columbia & how long in coming home?

About seven weeks each way. The Desp: to the Govr left on the 15 Decr—so that if he had replied at once there is just time for an answer to have been received.

Acknowledge and say that no answer has been received to his letter and that it is too soon to expect one. 4 Months are required for a despatch to be acknowledged, and further time must of course be necessary to inquire into any case upon which information is required.
