No. 9
21 March 1867
I have received your Despatch No. 19, of the 11th of January enquiring about a payment of £9,051.18.1 claimed by the Colony on Account of expenses of Royal Engineers and admitted by the Board of Treasury in a letter which was forwarded to you on the 7thofManuscript image of June 1866.
I have the honor to transmit to you, for your information, the enclosed copy of a further letter from the Treasury dated the 22nd of December last, pointing out that the admission of the claim from the Colony was made in error. The Colonial Auditor, it appears, neglected to include in his Account the Regimental Pay of the Engineers defrayed by the Imperial Government out of Army Estimates, and also the Colonial Pay of Colonel Moody paid to him by theTreasuryManuscript image Treasury. These items appear by the Accounts annexed to the Treasury teller to have amounted to the following sums.
Regimental Pay in 1862 £4397. 1.5
    "       "     1863 3625. 0.7
Col. Moody's Colonial
   Pay in 1862
1200. 0.0
Col. Moody's Colonial Pay
   in 1863
This is more than the amount which previously appeared to be due from this Country. The Treasury State, that having already paid to the Crown Agents the sum of £6,714, they will not reclaimit,Manuscript image it, but that as the demand on this Country was made and admitted by an oversight, they cannot make any further issue on that Account.
With reference to the allusion in the letter from the Treasury to the payment already made by them of £6,714, I transmit for your information Copies of a correspondence which passed with the Treasury at the time when the payment was made.
I have the honor to be
Your most obedient humble Servant
