No. 26
20th March 1871
My Lord,
I have the honor to forward a Copy of a Letter from Mr Charles Good, Assistant Colonial Secretary, making application to YourLordshipManuscript image Lordship for promotion.
2. I am glad to be able to bear favorable testimony to Mr Good's character and capacity; and I should have had pleasure in placing him in a better appointment, for which his intelligence and education would fit him, if I had been afforded an opportunitytoManuscript image to do so. Unfortunately for him the probability of his advancement will be much further diminished after the accomplishment of the Political changes which are now impending; and it is for this reason that he now hopes for Your Lordship's favorable consideration.
3.Manuscript image 3. I have granted Mr Good three month's double vacation leave of absence. Except for a very short period he has not been away from the Colony for twelve years.
I have the honor to be,
My Lord,
Your most obedient
Humble Servant

Reply that Lord K. will cause a note to be made of Mr Good's application, & will consider his claims with those of other candidates when vacancies occur in suitable appointments.
I do not, however, understand what Mr Good means by saying that it appears probable that he will loseManuscript image all the benefits of 12 years service as well as every chance for promotion or pension; but as he will soon appear here to urge his claims in person, we may then receive some explanation from him.
